7 Secrets to Thriving in the Show Jumping Arena

Hey there, it’s Marie Marks, CEO of Bridl, back in action! After a relaxing weekend, I’m gearing up for a week that’s packed with work and training, refining my skills, and managing the day-to-day of running my business. Life as an entrepreneur is one wild ride, so let me take you through my journey—complete with all its ups, downs, and everything in between.

Embracing the Equestrian Rollercoaster

Show jumping, much like entrepreneurship, is full of highs and lows. Some days, I feel invincible, effortlessly clearing jumps and hitting business milestones. On other days, I’m questioning what I can improve —from my training techniques to my business strategies. My company, Bridl, keeps me on my toes, much like the horses I ride. We’re constantly hustling, tackling challenges head-on, and dreaming big.

Tip 1: Stay True to Your Vision

When the going gets tough—whether it’s in the ring or the boardroom—it’s easy to lose sight of why you started. That’s why staying true to your vision is crucial. Remind yourself why you embarked on this journey, whether it’s the thrill of the ride or the passion for innovation. Let that passion fuel your drive to keep pushing forward, no matter what obstacles come your way.

Tip 2: Surround Yourself with a Strong Team

In both show jumping and business, you can’t do it all alone. Surround yourself with a supportive team that believes in your vision, whether it’s your barn crew, your coach, or your business partners. Together, you’ll weather the storms and celebrate the victories, making the journey all the more rewarding.

Saying Yes to Growth

In my riding and business, I’ve learned the importance of saying yes to opportunities —even when they’re intimidating. Staying organized, focused, and managing my team (both in the stables and the office) helps me tackle whatever challenges come my way. It’s a juggling act, but it pays off.

Tip 3: Embrace Continuous Learning

The equestrian world, like entrepreneurship, is constantly evolving. It’s essential to keep learning and adapting, whether it’s mastering new riding techniques, attending clinics, or seeking mentorship in business. The more you know, the better equipped you’ll be to handle whatever challenges lie ahead.

Navigating Pressure and Self-Doubt

Pressure and self-doubt are part of the package in both show jumping and entrepreneurship. Instead of letting them overwhelm me, I focus on what I can control—my mindset, my preparation, and my actions. It’s all about staying calm and moving forward, one stride at a time.

Tip 4: Practice Mindfulness

When the pressure starts to build—whether you’re facing a big competition or a major business decision—take a step back and practice mindfulness. Whether it’s through visualization exercises before a round or deep breathing before a meeting, find what helps you centre yourself and regain perspective. Remember, you’ve got this!

The Power of Patience and Precision

Patience is key, whether I’m working with a young horse or building my business. It’s tempting to rush the process, but I’ve learned that slow and steady wins the race. Taking my time and being precise in my training and business decisions pays off in the long run.

Tip 5: Focus on Quality Over Quantity

In a world that often glorifies doing more, it’s easy to fall into the trap of trying to do it all. But in both show jumping and business, it’s not about how much you do—it’s about how well you do it. Focus on quality over quantity, and you’ll find that you achieve more, both in the ring and in your career.

Embracing Self-Care and Balance

Taking care of myself is non-negotiable. Burnout is real, and I make sure to take breaks—whether it’s spending time with horses, enjoying quality time with my partner, or simply chilling out. It’s all about finding that balance between work and play, both in my equestrian pursuits and in running Bridl.

Tip 6: Schedule Regular “Me Time”

Make self-care a priority by scheduling regular “me time” into your calendar. Whether it’s a quiet ride, a long trail ride, or just some downtime in the stables, carve out time for activities that recharge your batteries. Remember, you can’t perform your best—on horseback or in business—if you’re running on empty.

Embracing Growth and Innovation

I’m always looking for ways to push boundaries and try new things, both in my riding and in business. Whether it’s expanding Bridl’s offerings or tackling new jumps, stepping out of my comfort zone keeps things exciting and drives growth.

Tip 7: Embrace Failure as a Learning Opportunity

Failure isn’t the end—it’s a stepping stone on the path to success. Instead of letting setbacks discourage you, embrace them as valuable learning experiences. Analyze what went wrong, adjust your approach, and keep moving forward with renewed determination. Every failure brings you one step closer to your goals, whether it’s a clear round or a successful business launch.

Riding the Waves of Show Jumping and Entrepreneurship

Show jumping and entrepreneurship are wild rides, full of challenges, triumphs, and constant growth. By staying true to my vision, embracing challenges, and keeping a positive attitude, I’m ready to take on whatever comes my way. So here’s to chase dreams, taking risks, and enjoying the journey—let’s ride!
